Fear is a built-in survival mechanism. It exists to keep us alive—plain and simple. Thousands of years ago, it kept us from being eaten by predators. Today, it keeps us from stepping into traffic or walking too close to a cliff’s edge.
But what happens when fear shows up in places where you want to be? Like on a climbing route, or in a boxing ring? That’s when fear stops being a survival tool—and starts becoming a barrier.
The truth is, humans are wired to seek out a little danger. Fast motorcycles, extreme sports, and full-contact training tap into something primal. Even in relatively controlled environments, like gyms or climbing crags, our brains can still trigger fight-or-flight responses. That rush of adrenaline? It’s normal. But when it overwhelms you before the first move, or first round, it might be time to retrain your response.
In climbing, fear can hit before your feet even leave the ground. You’re tied in, palms sweating, already asking yourself why you’re doing this. In boxing, fear shows up between the ropes—tense shoulders, shallow breath, eyes darting away from your partner. You feel like the clock’s frozen and your heart’s going 100 miles an hour.
The good news? With intentional training, that response can be recalibrated. Fear doesn’t have to run the show.
One of the first skills we work on is breathing—covered in-depth in the last post and throughout January on Instagram and Facebook. Breathing is the entry point. It gives you access to the part of your brain that makes calm, focused decisions instead of panicked ones. After that, we start layering skills through exposure. Bit by bit, you face the thing you fear under controlled conditions, with guidance and support.
Everyone’s fear looks a little different, which is why I approach it with careful observation and tailored strategies. This kind of mindset training is one of my favorite areas to coach, and I’ve seen huge shifts in athletes—from weekend climbers to boxers prepping for their first spar.
